A lifelong resident of Saginaw County, Don attended Saginaw Public Schools (Handley and South) until moving to Freeland during eighth grade. Don graduated from Freeland High School in 1977. He ran cross country and played basketball for three years for the Falcons. He was yearbook photographer and lighting director for the drama department his senior year.
As a youth, Don played on several city recreation teams in football, softball and basketball. As an adult he played regularly in city and township recreation leagues on basketball and softball teams, usually for Izzo Vending. Don helped coach many of the youth teams his son Brandon, and his nieces played on. He was an umpire for several years for Freeland Little League.
Don's family was a major influence on his love of sports. His father James B. Cox was a member of the Saints Peter & Paul Athletic Association and played for the SSPP Midgets undefeated and un-scored upon football team in 1937. His father helped build the press box at the old SSPP field on Sweet street. His brothers Jerry and Ken played most sports.
Don attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, graduating in 1981 from the photography program. Former employers include Bradford la-Rivere Agency, Dow Chemical, and LaserColor Productions. After several years as a contributer to The Township Times as a photographer and covering high school football, Don became sports editor at the weekly newspaper in November, 2009. In August, 2005 he started a sports photography web-site dedicated to high school sports. His "Sports Pages" include many Saginaw area schools.
