Richard Curry

 

Richard has coached hockey in this town for 3 decades. Won the Bantam ‘B’ Silver Stick in Midland, Friendship Tournament in Saginaw, and he took 4-different age groups to the State Finals (Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, and Bantam). Retired from coaching hockey in 2011.

Travel coach for 5-years (one in Flint/4 in Saginaw-Class ‘A’ and ‘AA’). Was the 1st Head Hockey Coach @ Heritage High School (3years Class ‘A’: 34-27-5). Richard was Head Coach and Assistant Coach @ Douglas MacArthur (109-65-5 with 5-Straight Saginaw High School Hockey Championships). His team was rated in the States top 10 and he once placed 3 of his players, 1st team All-State.

He has won numerous Holiday Hockey Tournaments along with Saginaw League and Playoff Titles in every age division, most recently with his son Patrick in the Pee Wee ‘B’ League in 2009 and the Bantam “B” season title in 2010. Coached and played defense for Fullerton Tool (for 12 years), as they won two Class ‘A’ City Titles @ the Civic Center and two Over 30 Titles at Bay Ice Arena. He took Fullerton to a Senior State Finals.

He played every year as a youth in Saginaw’s Knothole Baseball League @ Hoyt Park. Richard graduated from AHHS in 1961. He participated in track, golf, and cross country. Richard was the Sports Editor in 1961 and wrote for the nationally acclaimed paper all four years and was a Quill and Scroll winner in his senior year. He also was a photo-journalist for Saginaw’s Review Magazine-and a regular ‘Letter to the Editor’ contributor. Richard was an original Saginaw County Sports HOF Board Member. Along with Tom Mudd, Harold Campau, and the Saginaw Community Foundation he helped bring Vintage Base Ball Club to prominence in its 1st three years. As manager and part time catcher the team’s two year record was: 2008: 15-5 and a State of Michigan Title, 2009: 16-1-1, second straight State of Michigan Title, Sylvania Cup, and the World Championship @ Greenfield Village. He put up a painting on Hamilton Street in Old Town to honor the team.

Richard’s team won the National ‘Hot N Tot’ Bowling Title when he was 6 with the Florida Fruit Market.

He organized three events @ the Dow Diamond: the honoring of 27 professional players from the Tri-Cities (That day the Great Lakes Loons played in throw-back uniforms designed by Richard), and a 3-team Base Ball Exhibition with the Saginaw ‘Old Golds’, Bay City, and Midland. He researched and wrote the history of the 1883-1884 Saginaw ‘Old Golds’, the life and times of ‘Red’ McKee, Jim Northrup, and Tim McCoy. In 2010 he organized the Cooperstown “John Clarkson” Classic. In 2008 Richard set up a Saginaw baseball history display @ the Castle Museum and gave a speech on the Saginaw ‘Old Golds’. He did this again @ the Saginaw Club in 2009. He is the President of the AHHS Letter Winners Association in 2010. He is the CEO and Vice President of Fullerton Tool (the business has sponsored numerous sport’s teams) and President of M. Curry Corporation.
