Art Gelow was a three-sport star at South Junior High School leading his school to baseball, basketball (led city in scoring twice) and football teams to two city titles in each sport. He went on to quarterback Arthur Hill High School for three years (1961-63) and participated in track three years where he was a state qualifier in the 100-yard dash and long jump. In basketball Gelow played three years and was the only junior starter on the 1963 state semifinal team. As a senior he was named to the All-Valley and All- State and was the leading scorer in the SVL with a 24.8 average. Gelow also set a single-game scoring record of 48 points against Flint Central in ’64 (topping Ernie Thompson’s record). He was recruited by over 100 colleges and wound up playing four years at University of South Dakota. A three-year starter at guard, Gelow would go on to establish a career scoring record of 1,115 points and was named All-Conference and All-American. As a senior he led the nation in free throw percentage (93 percent) and won Little All-America honors. He was elected into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 1992. Gelow then coached basketball at North Dakota State, North Dakota State Junior College and Delta College for 15 years with an overall record of 231-93. He also coached golf for 10 years at Delta and North Dakota State Junior College while
currently coaching at Savannah State University. He has won the Saginaw Golf Invitational best ball four times. As a professional he plays on the Southeast senior tour and has earned over 40 wins in 17 years.
